Hiya pals!
Despite rumours that Berlin’s art scene would be virtually non-existent over the summer, we here at CAE have been quite busy with many an art related activity. Trips to shows such as Yours Auslander and The Possibility of an Island provided David and I a platform for thought provoking discussions on the themes of belonging, peripheries and otherness, taking our minds of the (shortlived!) summer heatwave. Unfortunately my Displacement Discussion Group for the Transart Fest, which involved a walking tour to various arts initiatives in Berlin, did did not avoid the heat of what was one of the hottest days this summer, however the conversation (and several bottles of water) kept us sustained throughout.
And as for very recent developments, we are very pleased to announce our latest major project: Common Bond. The project kicks off in early September with an artist residency for Edinburgh based photographer Rosita McKenzie. Rosita and I have been working together for over 3 years, our last major project being Through the Looking Glass, Dimly in Edinburgh last year. Whilst here, Rosita will embark on an historical investigation of the city and its cultural heritage, the common bonds between British and German culture, and interpret her experiences of her new environment from her perspective as a blind person. She will also work together with Berlin based blind photographer Jan Bölsche to run a free photography workshop on Saturday 14th September and together we will host a discussion group on the theme of “Rethinking Normality: Genetic engineering & Ableism”, as part of our Waffles and Coffee series on Wednesday 18th September.
We are delighted to welcome Rosita to Berlin and are very much looking forward to working with her in the flesh again! If you’d like to find out more about these events and how to book a spot, just visit our facebook page, the events page on our website or simply email me for more details.
Bye for now!
Kate
