We collaborated with Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop to organise this discussion group that accompanied our Exchange exhibition Carl Scrase:Life: Death: Edinburgh: And, also held at ESW. Dr. Grant Jeffrey, lecturer in Psychology at Edinburgh Napier University was our wonderfully liberal, socialist guest speaker and provocateur for the evening.
As mentioned in the discussion, Carl’s practice is beginning to move in a new direction: one that embraces cross-disciplinary collaboration, one that seeks to bring about social change. In a bid to explore how an artist might go about doing this, we decided to invite people from different backgrounds to discuss whether art could cause social change, whether artists are well placed to do this, and what kind of social change is needed – if any!
What resulted was an insightful and engaging discussion that, although was far from answering this mammoth of a question, was successful in posing some questions that perhaps need further discussion (particularly in light of recent changes to arts practice and funding here in the UK) by all people.
You can also read the article Dr. Jeffrey mentions in his talk here.
